once a pawn

Mike, from Once A Pawn, the local band just dropped off copies of their cd "in this house". I've been listening to it and it sounds really good. They will be playing the Friday after thanksgiving, the 25th, at Knickerbockers with For Edward and Lollipop Factory.

self-righteous brothers

Sorry, I've been neglecting my blog, I'm still not used to getting on the computer all the time. Few weeks ago I saw the Self-Righteous Brothers at the zoo bar on Oct. 29th. Had a blast as i always do with those guys. They are so much fun. Las Vegas act crossed with Kiss. In fact I think they are Lincoln's Kiss. I believe they are playing the Zoo bar in new year's eve and if so i will make every effort to get there. Hopefully my designated driver, Jada Ray, can go because I refuse to deal with this town's pitiful excuse for a cab company. They don't want people to drink and drive, well, decent cab service would help a lot. I would go out more if I thought I could get a cab home late nite. Ok, I'll get off the soap box.

battleship grey

friday, the 28th of october, battleship grey is going to play live in the store around 9:00. battleship grey is a new band with harry dingman on guitar (millions, for against, cartoon pupils), bruce stephen on drums (gladstones, cartoon pupils), trevor bassen on bass (k-nines), and thom dingman on vocals (confederate queens). should be fun. going to try to do a live webcast on my website using ustream.

stones 78'

went to the stones, live from texas in 1978 movie that had 1 showing at southpoint. very interesting if you're a stones fan. they did 8 songs off of "some girls" and it was a short tour and the first with ronnie wood i believe. jagger sounds great although the camera is on him too much. my problem with the movie was that keith richards guitar is buried in the mix. don't know if this was an accident and just a bad recording or someone didn't want you to hear keith. but i found it annoying. i have a bootleg cd of songs from that tour that has a better sound than the movie did. but if you're a big stones fan it's worth seeing. i'm glad i did, tho i think "ladies and gentlemen, the rolling stones" is a lot better.

boys on titan

got the titan records collection on new vinyl, red vinyl actually. they did a good job, i like how they put all the Boy's songs on one record. and i was wrong before, there are 12 boys songs. also a nice booklet. the box set doesn't come with the live 10 inch however, i guess that was only with early mail orders.

ideal cleaners

dan from ideal cleaners just dropped off cd copies of their "far as you know" album. they are playing saturday at duffy's around 11:00. also i haven't mentioned it but i have the capitol punishment vol. 1 cd for sale. and for more local stuff i have the titan's compilation coming on red vinyl which has a bunch of songs ( i can't remember but i think 8) by The Boys (of lincoln) along with other midwest bands from that time.

power of the spoken word

just got in a sealed copy of power of the spoken word if anyone's interested.

lincoln calling

lot of bands playing in a lot of venues, so go out and support live music. looks like there is something for everyone. i plan on catching bill jones punk band evil wiener at the spigot on saturday.

Pains

looks like i'm gonna have to miss the pains of being pure at heart show in lawrence on thursday. my buddie mark, who i was going with can't make it as his dad is in the hospital and not doing well. hope you get well soon ,lyle. anyway, i have two tickets to the show if anyone is interested.

David Lindley

Went to David Lindley at the Zoo bar for an early show on monday. Haven't really been a fan but I had enough people tell me how good and fun he is live and they were right. Kinda eccentric, he plays multiple stringed instruments and he really knows how to play. With humorous banter between songs and playing different styles of music he was really entertaining. The crowd favorite was definately "Mercury Blues" off his El Rayo X lp from 1981. His resume includes playing with all kinds of famous people and we're lucky he makes it to lincoln everyone once in awhile.

billy bacon

Went and saw Billy Bacon at the Zoo bar for an early show last Thursday and again on Friday. Wasn't planning on going again on Friday but Thursday's crowd wasn't huge tho obviously big fans of his and the band hadn't had much time to rehearse. But seeing Jerry Mink playing guitar with Billy again was magical and I knew Friday would be even better and it was. Good crowd and you could really see Jerry and Billy click together. Borrowing an orange (not pink) fender guitar from Phil Shoemaker, Jerry really sounded good and the more they played the more together they were. I would have gone Saturday but I'm getting to old for that many nights in a row.

larry

Made it to the zoo bar for the benefit for former owner Larry Boehmer who is fighting cancer. Was at the store til 6 so i missed the first 3 hours but I caught a good portion of the Mezcal brothers (always a good show) and all of the Tijuana Gigolos (which i think i spelled wrong) who are one of my favorite local bands and who i think played longer than expected as Kris Lager was running late. It was packed when i got there and i think the fundraising went well. had so many good times at the zoo i felt i had to be there and give something back. my thoughts are with you, larry, and good luck.

candye kane

saw candye kane at an early zoo bar show on tuesday. man that woman can sing. good crowd and she sounded great. still a healthy looking woman despite losing weight in her battle with cancer which i hear has returned. let's hope she beats it again. did new songs and old favorites like 200 lbs. of fun and encored with masturbation blues which she said was her most downloaded song on itunes.

bake

had a visit last saturday from an old friend, jon baker. bake used to work for the old dirt cheap and was also involved with project records. also was in the gladstones, a great local band. it was great to see him and he came bearing gifts. thanks, jon

bon iver

went to bon iver at the stir cove in c.b. great show, had a good time. good crowd. you know it's a good crowd when most people are listening during the quiet moments and not talking. he had a full band, horn players, violin, a couple percussionists. did 2 songs for an encore, said that was all they had and thanked the crowd. up next for me is candye kane at the zoo bar for an early tuesday show. haven't seen her in years but that woman can sing. years ago when i worked for twisters she did an instore downtown and sang without a band or mic and was amazing. i thought she might be a gimmick because of her past but she is the real deal. l. kent wrote about her in friday's ground zero and i guess she's had a relapse in her fight with cancer but she's still going strong. so if you've never seen her do yourself a favor and go see her. you'll see a great show and support her at the same time.

pains of being pure at heart

pulled the trigger last nite and ordered pains of being pure at heart tix. one of my favorite newer bands they will be in lawrence, kansas at the bottleneck on oct. 13th. looking forward to it. also gonna try to catch bon iver in council bluffs at the casino on thursday. haven't been a big fan but their stuff has really grown on me lately and i would like to see em.

dr. dark

just had a great surprise visit from doug lawson, aka dr. dark. doug used to order imports for the old dirt cheap record store 25 - 30 yrs ago and turned me onto some great music. i own the factory sampler, double 7 inch, thanks to doug. he told me to buy it and i asked him what was it and he said just buy it and i did. that kind of thing happened all the time. he's also a great guitarist and played in fever blister with preston click among other bands. i remember seeing him at a snakefinger show at the drumstick and he was running around with this big grin on his face like a little kid because snakefinger had some former beefheart members in his band and doug is a huge beefheart fan . great to see you doug and i hope it's not another 15 or 20 years before i see you again.

surprise left and domestica

last week at the zoo bar saw surprise left and domestica ( sorry lepers we had to leave) and really had a good time. i hate labels but i guess they're post post punk. it might have been surprise left's first show but you wouldn't have known it as they were really good. domestica really rocked and you have to love their intensity. i would highly recommend both bands, so if you have a chance go see them.

earlier summer shows

dave alvin and brave combo put on a great night of music at the zoo bar outdoor anniversary show. had a great time. it seemed like dave was honestly taken aback when the crowd sang along with marie marie. i guess he later said that had never happened before. also the dale watson show at the zoo bar this past summer was a blast and he did sweet jenny brown for me. belairs had a usual great tho early show and i saw the tijuana gigolos play to a packed house also at the zoo. mezcal bros did a fun show outdoors at the park off 17th street whose name i'm drawing a blank on which is bad as that's my neighorhood. it's hell getting old.

thanks

So many people to thank, first my parents, my brothers Jim and Randy and their wives, Karen and Bev, Anna G for a logo design I will eventually use on some stickers and maybe t-shirts, but I digress, thanks to Shaker Dan and Ronnie Zap without who I never could have redone this location,(also Dustin and Tyler) Mike B and Tristen, Mark S for painting and finding this location, Nanos and Marsha, the Wieses and Roger, Baby T and Jamie for the carpet, Larry from Trade-a-tape, Stu from Recycled Sounds, Jada Ray, Angie (AA), Justin for dealing with windstream, Trevor from Canine Consultant, Jessie from Sunny's Boutique (I hope that's right} and everyone else who gave me encouragement. I'm sure I left someone out, I'm sorry for that. Oh, also for the people at Drastic Plastic and Saddlecreek for putting up with a computer moron. And another thank you to Mike B or else I couldn't do this blog. Later and remember , VINYL RULES!! P.S. I almost forgot Jimmy.
