Wild Nothing/Dive (or Diiv)

Little late with this one, but a couple weeks ago I saw a great show at Sokol Underground, Diiv and the Wild Nothing.  Both bands are on Captured Tracks, a small but great New York label (which is also re-issuing local band For Against's first 3 lps in a box set on 12/4).  Both bands put on great shows.  Call it shoegaze or dream pop or whatever it was just great pop.  Diiv probably rocked a little more and Wild Nothing was a little more melodic, apples and oranges, I couldn't say which one was better.  loved them both.  The new Wild Nothing lp is fantastic and I hope to have some in the store in the near future, same with the new Diiv lp.

RIP Larry Boehmer

I didn't really know Larry Boehmer, former owner of the Zoo Bar. I first went to the Zoo in 77' or 78' (to see Charlie Burton) and by the 80's I was a regular, especially for FAC. So over the years we had a few brief conversations but mostly just exchanged greetings. But I had alot of great times there and saw many great bands, many famous performers. The bar has weathered some tuff times as their crowd grew older and bands started costing more. I saw Buddy Guy there twice (still one of the best guitarist I've ever seen live, maybe the best, tho Richard Thompson is right there) but his asking price went up as did many others. It is a credit to Larry and his staff that some bands still came there even tho they could make more elsewhere but they love the Zoo bar. I don't think alot of people realize the Zoo bar is one of the coolest in the state and in the country for that matter. David Lindley on Tuesday, always entertaining, i will be there and next Sunday there will be a special gathering to remember Larry.

Crosby, Stills and Nash

Round 2 of Pinewood bowl shows for me.  Too old for 2 nites in a row but oh well.  I'll bitch first this time.  Half hour wait on Van Dorn St. trying to get in the place.  At the Coddington/Van Dorn intersection the police officers were letting what looked like equal # of cars go from each street when the back-up on van Dorn was like a mile and there was almost no back-up on coddington, i don't know, maybe they had to do it that way.  The band started as we were making our way to our seats.  Anyone standing in front of their seats were told to sit down and forget about dancing, you got exiled to some area in the trees.  Can't they have an area better for that?
CSN sounded great when they rocked their old tunes.  The newer ones didn't do much for me.  Then they ran a bunch of mellow acoustic  songs in a row which i thought took some of the energy out of the crowd, but then again, i was kinda tired.  Crosby and Nash's voices sounded great, Stills was a little rough.  He only sang a couple songs, but he did some great guitar solos.  People don't realize what a good guitar player he is.  They did do "Almost Cut My hair", which is one of my favorites.  Only 1 encore song where they've been doing more at other shows this tour.  Why?  Traffic do move quickly out of the park for us but i heard it some people a while.  Also, the paper said 3,000 for My Morning Jacket and 3,500 for CSN but there seemed to be a bigger difference in number of people than that.

My Morning Jacket/ Band of Horses

My 1st show at the Pinewood Bowl since The Boys and the Outcats which I barely remember, probably in the early 80's.  Nice venue.  Band of Horses opened up and I have to say i own 2 of their lps and only 1 MMJ lp.  They sounded really good, i like that guys voice (He joined MMJ for 1 song).  I wish they could have played longer (less than an hour).  They did 2 songs from their upcoming lp tho i think they said 1 of those songs didn't make the lp.  MMJ put on a great show, i can see why they have a reputation as a great live band.  Jim James has an amazing voice, the band was hot and the light show was pretty cool.  They did a cool version of Elton john's "rocketman" also.
I liked the general admission seating.  There were no seats down close so you could go back and forth and sit down for awhile if you wanted.  I also thought the sound was better farther back.  But otherwise can someone show those people how to put on an outdoor show?  Maybe the Zoo bar staff can go out there.  They had beer tents where you had to go in one end and exit the other or get yelled at.  Overstaffed and 1 person handed you your beverage and you paid someone else.  And 24 oz. beers for $10.  I don't mind paying $5 a beer at a special event but those big cans get warm unless you drink fast and at those prices they should give you the damn coozie.  And they were running out of beer midway thru the show.  And the news said they busted 30 some people for drinking outside the venue.  If they are being discreet, leave them alone.  Treat it like a home football game and only bust them if they're acting like jerks.  Hopefully they can get these things worked out because I think the venue has great potential.

New Vinyl

New vinyl arriving Tuesday:  Raincoats  selftitled,  1st 2 Strokes lps, My Morning Jacket  "It Still Moves",  Band of Horses  "Infinate Arms",  Sea & Cake  "Nassau",  If By Yes "Salt on Sea grass"  (Petra from the decemberists, Yuko from Cibo matto with David Byrne),  Fleet Foxes selftitled and "Helplessness Blues",   Dylan live at brandeis university 63',  Dos  "Dos y Dos"  (Mike Watt and King from Blk Flag),  Woody Guthrie "This Machine Kills facists",  Blur 7" from Olympic closing ceremony, Black keys  "Big Come Up", and mike Watt "Hyphenated Man"

A Place To Bury Strangers

APTBS had another kick ass show at the Bourbon  2 weeks ago (damn time flies).  Had a really good time and they changed their set quite a bit from last time.  Hunters and Snake Island opened up and both were good.  Hunters is a N.Y. band, kinda punk, with a female lead singer who puts on quite a show.  Snake Island is I believe from Omaha, were kinda garagie and at times reminded me of Vietnam (Whatever happened to those guys?) .  Got Snake Island's 12" ep and really like it, they said they would bring me some, hope they do.

a place to bury strangers

a place to bury strangers are coming back to the Bourbon this friday, the 20th.  It is an early show, 6:00 and there are 2 opening bands.  These guys kicked ass last time and it's great they're coming back.  bring your earplugs as they are the loudest band i've seen in a long time.  should be fun!

Facebook

i finally got a facebook page for the store up and running.  actually 2 as the first one didn't seem to be coming up for some people so with the help of scott we added a second one.  facebook was no help.  so i have more on one page than the other.  there is a link from one to the other, if you're on one that doesn't have much, switch to the other one.  i will try to list new arrivals and such there.

Zoo Fest

Had a good time at zoofest as I usually do.  It was hot, tho a breeze picked up as the night went on.  Kinda strange seeing the bel-airs in daylight, but they were good as usual as were Brave Combo. Split lip Rayfield were really good also.  I had always heard that but had never seen them.  Wanted to walk over to the Bourbon and catch Universe Contest but i got drunk and forgot about them.  I've heard good things about them.  Wanted to catch Saturday's lineup also but between my hangover and the heat i never made it off my couch.  I've seen Candye Kane and she's great, but I've never seen the New Orleans Suspects and Goodfoot, both of which I've heard good things.

Capitol Punishment

Just got in more of the Capitol Punishment book and Volume 1 of the cd compilation.  Also got a few of their T-shirts which sell for $10.  Volume 2 (cd compilation) is not done yet, should be coming in a month or 2.

The show at the Joyo was a lot of fun and had a good crowd.  The Rebates sounded really good, I forgot how good a guitar player Stinky (Dave Wees) is.  And the rhythm section was spot on.  Also really enjoyed the Sacred Cows and Battleship Gray.  Which reminds me, I will have some Rebates T-shirts as soon as I can pick them up in Omaha, which I hope to Monday when I go to the cws.

Dale Watson

Dale Watson put on another great show to a packed house at the Zoo bar.  If you like old time country/honky tonk, you have to check out him sometime.  He has a classic country voice and is very entertaining.   His "Nashville Rash", a putdown of modern country is hilarious, especially this time, as he ad-libbed some lines about the recent country music awards.  He said he just did a live show that was filmed by pbs, but won't be shown til next January, I believe he said.  Local honky tonker Lloyd McCarter opened up and also joined Dale for a cover of "Hello Walls".

Scott Biram & Lydia Loveless

Had a good time at the Scott Biram and Lydia Loveless show in the Bourbon's front room.  Good crowd who seemed to really enjoy the show.  Lydia opened and it was just her on acoustic guitar and her bass player.  No drummer (her dad) this time.  She did a new song and a song off her first lp which she said has been re-issued (and which i guess she disavows).  She also did "Allison", the b-side of her record store day 7", written by Elvis Costello.   She's a lot of fun to see and I highly recommend you go see her if you get the chance, and pick up her lp, "Indestructible Machine".
Scott Biram, a one man band,  was grabbing different guitars and pounding out a blues rock mix that got the crowd going.  With the only percussion being the amplified stomping of his feet, his cranked up guitar blasting away, he didn't need a band.  He was very engaging with the crowd and threw in humorous asides all thru the show, which i believe lasted a couple of hours.
All in all a great one two show with 2 very entertaining acts.

too many shows!

so many shows going on and i can't afford them all, have to pick and choose.   but if you like a band or performer and you have the chance go see them.  live music is great.  you never know when a band will break up or, unfortunately, someone will die.  i missed link wray at the zoo bar for a niece's graduation party and he died shortly after that.  i saw james brown at the casino a few months before he passed away.  lee "scratch" perry is coming to the bourbon and he's a reggae legend and in his 70's.  but i'm not sure it's in my budget and surprise left is playing that night for free at stransky park.  crosby, stills, and nash are getting up there and they'll be at the pinewood bowl in august, as will my morning jacket and band of horses, a great 2 band show.  really want to see the dum dum girls at the maha festival in omaha in august.  their last lp was one of my favorites from last year.  and sunday , the 27th of may, capitol punishment will have their volume 2 release party at the joyo.  many bands, past and present, will be there,  can't miss that.  others i'm looking forward to are debbie davies at the zoo bar on the 30th and dale watson at the zoo in early june.  lydia loveless is an opening act at the bourbon coming up, would like to see her again.  best coast, dirty beaches, on and on.

st. vincent

another great show!  it's that time of year.  st. vincent sold out the slowdown.  she put on a great show even without a bass player, what, you think you're the doors.  $5 guiness tall boys , yeah, i spelled it wrong.  shearwater opened up, liked some of their songs, not that familiar with them.  "you as you were" off the new lp sounded good.  st. vincent rocked on her little guitar.  (when her roadie , a big guy, was getting her guitar ready pre-show it looked like a toy)  her herky jerky solos are cool and her voice sounded great.  here's an idea for the saddle creek crew tho, open your store when there's a big show, you might sell something.

hank III

saw hank 3 at sokol in omaha.  he put on a great show as usual, just good beer drinking music.  place was packed, tho i think they were letting people from the hard rock show upstairs come down.  uncomfortably hot until i stumbled onto a ac vent.  after the honky tonk set he did a melvins/slow sabbath thing that was kind of cool.  he asked how many people were from lincoln and quite a few yelled out.  come back to lincoln, hank!  part of the fun of a hank 3 show is watching the crowd,  his fans range from country music fans to punk rockers to metal headers to indie types.

drums, craft spells, part time

Saw the drums, craft spells, and part time at the Waiting Room in omaha.  great show, all 3 bands were good,  good crowd and i liked the venue.  hadn't been in that building since seeing charlie burton there when it was the liffticket, probably in the 80's.   they've done a great job remodeling it.  i liked the size of it, not too big and not too small.  staff seemed to be on the ball also.   the drums, who at one time i thought were brit-pop, are actually from new york, tho i guess there is a florida connection also.  but they remind me of brit-pop.  craft spells, on the captured track label out of new york, reminded me of 80's pop, updated of course.  at the same time i was thinking of nick heyword a friend sitting next to me mentioned haircut 100.  part time, from san francisco, were poppy also, but in their own way.  their 1st lp is on mexican summer and they have a new one coming out later this summer.

live at lefty's volume 2

Bol'd Crow will be playing here in the store, April 22, Sunday, at 8:00. for those of you who don't know them, they are an acoustic folk/bluegrass band. they're really good, check them out on youtube. should be a lot of fun. we will also live stream the show on leftysrecords.com.
capacity is limited, so don't get here too late.

aptbs

sorry, i'v been lazy with the blog. anyway a place to bury strangers put on a great show. really loud, rocking, cool stage and light setup. reminded me of seeing the strokes for the first time, not that they sounded like the strokes, just good, loud rock with an edge that wasn't metal or punk pop. talked with them a little after the show and it seemed like they had a good time. always nice to hear british accents here in lincoln.
battleship gray sounded great on a big stage, tho i have to say i'm biased as i know those guys. that was their first show in a club (and opening for a national act). hope to see more of them. i believe they will play at the capitol punishment show at the joyo on may 27th, which will also have a rebates reunion. dave "stinky" weise (sp?) who also played with buck naked and the barebottomed boys, pearl harbor, and wilson gil (among many others) will be coming back from san fran for that show. that's a can't miss show!

rip Dave Sink

Just heard that Dave Sink passed away. Dave ran the Antiquarium record store until 06' and was quite a guy. I didn't really know him well but always enjoyed going into his store (and still do) and talking music with him. The World-herald has a good article on him in todays paper and comments from Conor Oberst and others from the omaha music scene. Rest in peace, Dave.

Lydia Loveless

Saw Lydia Loveless last wednesday at Duffy's and really enjoyed her show. All the cliches apply that you might have heard, lyrics wise and well-traveled, for someone so young, (she's 21), and a big voice from someone so small ( I doubt she's 5 foot or 90 lbs.). She's kind of honky-tonk, little country, little of a punk edge. There was a good crowd and after she turned off her amp enough people yelled that she turned it back on and did 2 more songs by herself. (she had a stand-up bass player and a drummer for the show) Opening act, Amy Schmidt & gthe Restless Things, also put on a good show. I had the vinyl of her latest lp but sold it the next day. I will get more. (Lydia's lp not Amy's)

capitol punishment

bill jones dropped off some copies of the Capitol Punishment book. a great book that puts all the old capitol punishment fanzines together with additional text and photos covering the lincoln punk/indie scene from 1980-1984. a must have for any local music fan.
